The three-year-old Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach has been named the No. 1 resort in the United States by Condé Nast Traveler magazine in its 2011 Readers’ Choice Awards.

The awards honor the world’s best cities, islands, cruise lines, airlines, hotels and resorts, culled from nearly 11,000 choices and voted on by nearly 30,000 of the magazine’s readers.

Since opening in November 2008, the resort has earned a AAA Five-Diamond Award, its spa has been ranked with five stars by Forbes magazine, and its two golf courses designed by Tom Fazio have been ranked by Golf Digest magazine as among America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses. The resort also has been recognized for excellence by Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report, Travel + Leisure magazine and the Los Angeles Times, among others.

The resort is set on 504 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean and features 128 two-, three- and four-bedroom villas with coastal views and 204 bungalow guest rooms and suites with private terraces, a five-star-rated spa, four restaurants (including Andrea, which specializes in northern Italian cuisine, and a large “Coliseum” pool, which is one of the largest circular pools in existence, with tiered decks and cabanas.

The Pelican Hill Golf Club features two 18-hole layouts, both designed by Tom Fazio, featuring ocean panoramas on most holes.
