Multi-billion dollar Vegas resort by Steve Wynn boasts $500 green fees

By Southland Golf MagazinePublished: June, 2005

Las Vegas’ latest entry into the world of glitz, glamour and golf is Wynn Las Vegas, which opened April 29. The $2.7 billion mega-resort from Steve Wynn is a 50-story behemoth, located in the middle of the Strip where the Desert Inn once stood. It boasts a 150-foot mountain between the Strip and the resort, complete with a five-story waterfall cascading into a three-acre lake.

The luxury resort living theme is evident from the flat-screen TVs in every room to the on-site Ferrari and Maserati dealership. Rooms begin around $250 during the week and $400 on weekends.

The resort’s golf course, open only to guests, is the second collaboration between Wynn and Tom Fazio and, if it duplicates the experience of Shadow Creek, it’s going to be a beauty. Eleven of the 18 holes border water and, with a par of 70 and back tees stretching to 7,042 yards, it’s obviously tough. Its look is both new Vegas and old Vegas. More than 1,000 shrubs and trees were planted, but more than 1,000 trees from the former Desert Inn Golf Course were transplanted, giving a new course an old-school feel. Green fees are $500.

If that’s a little out of your league, you might want to consider Las Vegas Golf Getaways, a one-stop place to take care of golf and accommodation needs at discounted rates. Operated by Walters Golf, the web site offers a variety of packages between its four courses and 14 Las Vegas hotels, ranging from the Mandalay Bay to the Stardust.

Because the site is managed by Walters Golf, “we control our own tee sheets,” said Michael Levine, the company’s director of marketing. “You’re not dealing with an outside booker who then has to contact us. We know what we have and we can offer them at substantially reduced rates, which is rare for Walters Golf. As a general company rule, we don’t typically reduce our rates but this service allows us to mix in a lower green fee with the hotel room.”

The courses include high-end properties like Bali Hai and Royal Links, and more affordable courses such as Desert Pines and Stallion Mountain. The hotels include pricey digs like the Mandalay Bay and more cost-conscious standards like the Stardust. A two-night summer package at the Stardust that includes two rounds of golf is available for $99 per midweek night.

“We have packages for people who want to stay at the most expensive properties and play the most expensive courses, or the least expensive hotels and least expensive course and every possible configuration,” Levine said. “If you want to stay at Mandalay Bay and play Bali Hai one day and Royal Pines the next, just one phone call gets you golf, accommodations and transportation.”

Other fine courses in Las Vegas include two Pete Dye-designed tracks at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort (702) 658-1400; the Arthur Hills-designed Legacy Golf Club in Henderson (702) 897-2187; the two Tom Fazio-designed tracks at Primm Valley Golf Club at the state line (702) 679-5510; and the Colonial-themed Revere at Anthem in Henderson (702) 259-4653.
