Paull Veroulis

The former La Quinta resident has helped good buddy Anthony Kim manage his rise to stardom.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: November, 2008

When ranking 2008 PGA Tour storylines, the rise of Anthony Kim is right up there. The 23-year-old Kim, a Los Angeles native and former La Quinta resident, has distinguished himself from the pack of up-and-coming young guns this year by winning twice and emerging as a leader for the United States during the Ryder Cup.

Paull Veroulis, whose father Bob is the director of sales and marketing at Trilogy Golf Club at La Quinta, was a junior on the La Quinta High School golf team when he befriended Kim, who was then a sophomore. They became so close that Veroulis cited Kim as the reason why he transferred from College of the Desert to the University of Oklahoma to complete his education.

With degree in hand, the 24-year-old Veroulis moved to Kim’s house in Dallas and became his personal assistant. So far, he’s enjoyed being along for the ride.

What does your job entail?
I make sure Anthony’s got everything he needs for the day, especially when he’s playing in tournaments. I take care of all the organizational stuff, like making sure people receive tickets to events, so all he has to worry about is playing golf.

Sounds pretty fun.
It’s good to be around your best friend every day. It doesn’t have to be an employer-employee type of relationship, it’s more like when he needs something, I’ve got his back. I’ve also been able to go to some pretty cool places; we were in Korea recently and this month we’ll be going to South Africa for the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

Is this something you’d like to do for a while?
I grew up around golf, so it’s something I know. He’s put me in a position to meet a lot of important people and grow with him. Hopefully, I can learn more and become smarter, and eventually help him in a bigger capacity.

Is it difficult for you guys to hang out normally in public now?
Before, even after he won the Wachovia Championship, we’d go out to eat and nobody would really recognize him. It’s pretty hard for him to go out now without being recognized. He’s still kind of enjoying the ride. He’s not bothered when people try to get a picture of him or get an autograph, but I can imagine that sometimes it could become a little overbearing.
