A business that started with one store in North Hollywood in 1965 and changed the way golfers buy equipment has grown into one of the largest golf retailers in the country by doing things the old-fashioned way.

“Taking care of the customer is the most important part of our business,” said John Phipps, director of marketing for Worldwide Golf, the umbrella corporation that includes Roger Dunn Golf Shops in Orange and Los Angeles counties and the Golf Mart in San Diego County. “We learned a long time ago what it takes to be successful.”

That philosophy is evident at Roger Dunn Golf Shops and Golf Marts.

“Our guys are trained by the vendors, like Callaway, TaylorMade, Cleveland and Ping,” Phipps said. “They sell clubs for a living and have been doing so for a long time. So we feel that if you come to Roger Dunn, you’re coming to a place where people care about helping you play better. If you have an experienced person selling you a club, he can pick out things that are maybe holding you back.”

And how does that help grow the game and keep people involved?

“We feel that if a customer comes in and gets fit by one of our specialists, or finds something that improves their game, they are going to enjoy the game more and continue playing,” Phipps said.

The Roger Dunn Superstore in Santa Ana is the chain’s largest — a 35,000-square-foot store that includes a large putting green and numerous hitting cages to try out clubs. Other products include apparel, instructional DVDs and golf gifts.

Roger Dunn also is actively involved in the community, sponsoring several charity tournaments throughout the year, including events that help raise money for Hoag Hospital.
