Desert retreats

Unwind at Residence Club at PGA West or Miramonte.

The Residence Club at PGA West.
There are hundreds of places to stay in the Coachella Valley, from exclusive resorts to roadside motels. Amid that spectrum are two properties recently enjoyed by an Orange County magazine executive who says that if he could live anywhere in the world, it would be this golf-heavy part of the desert.

“I’m not a big fan of the heat, but I’d take it if I could live in Indian Wells or La Quinta,” said Brian O’Neill, chief financial officer of Churm Media, which publishes Southland Golf.

The Residence Club at PGA West is part of the golf complex in La Quinta. It’s a time-share in which people pay $300,000 for a fractional ownership (one-ninth) for one of 25 identical, 3,365-square-foot homes. There’s also a $1,200 a month surcharge per owner.

“You buy into the project, not a specific home,” O’Neill said. “So, among your 40 days, you might stay at house No. 1 for five days and then house No. 2 for five more, and so on. But though every one is identical, they’re all very luxurious and the grounds are lovely.”

For an additional fee, the property will stock a home’s refrigerator with whatever the owner requests. There’s also a concierge to take care of all golf and restaurant reservations, and owners get preferential tee times and discounted rates at PGA West’s courses as well as the La Quinta Resort and Club.

The other property visited by O’Neill and his wife was the Miramonte Resort and Spa, one of four resorts that surround the Indian Wells Golf Resort.

“It’s a completely luxurious, peaceful and beautiful place,” he said. “The recently expanded spa is what it’s most known for, and those amenities are spectacular. But it’s also got great food and service and pools throughout the property. It’s so secluded that you really feel like you’re somewhere other than Southern California.”

The property is comprised of several small buildings for a more laid-back atmosphere, and the surroundings are perfect for a romantic getaway, buddy golf trip or family vacation.
