When the month of November rolls around, many Southern Californians’ thoughts turn toward holiday travel and leaving the Southland. But golfers shouldn’t be blamed for daydreaming about the picturesque aspects of the Coachella Valley. There isn’t a better month of the year to experience the region’s stunning courses than November. First: the weather. The average high temperature in November is 78 degrees and the average rainfall is less than an inch. That means sunny, brilliant blue skies. And if that’s not perfect weather, it’s certainly close. Second: the course conditions. Course overseeding, which replaces the dry and dormant Bermuda grass with greener winter grass, takes several weeks and most facilities begin the process in October. That means by November, the courses are fresh and pristine. They’re exploding in emerald shades and undisturbed by divots and barren patches. In short, you’re playing the layouts the way they’re supposed to be played. Third: tee times. While green fees in November are higher than they are during the summer, they’re not as high as when peak season really begins in January. And the chances of getting a tee time are great because the exodus of so-called “snowbirds” — retired folks from Canada and snowed-in parts of the northern United States — doesn’t really advance on desert communities until after Christmas. Add up the weather, the conditions and the relatively uncrowded courses, and there may not be a better place in the world to play golf in the month of November than the greater Palm Springs area.
