![]() The Classic Club’s three-year run as host course of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic came to an end this summer, but the Palm Desert course is still a top-notch destination in the desert. Tournament officials decided to keep the event’s four courses grouped closer together, so if the wind kicked up the weather conditions would be more consistent. Greg Rubino, the Classic Club’s PGA general manager, actually received calls from people who thought the tournament’s venue switch meant the daily-fee Palm Desert course would no longer be operational. Not even close. “It really doesn’t change what the Classic Club is all about,” said Rubino. “The event didn’t make the Classic Club, the facility is something that stands on its own.” The course, designed by Arnold Palmer and managed by Troon Golf, remains one of the most charismatic and productive high-end properties in the Coachella Valley. The par-72 layout features five sets of tees, picturesque water features and superb playing conditions. And the 63,000-square-foot clubhouse is one of the most opulent among public facilities. When the Classic Club re-opens from overseeding on Monday, Nov. 10, patrons will be able to utilize a new fleet of Club Car Precedent golf carts complete with full-color ProLink GPS systems. No matter what time of year it is, golfers are entitled to complimentary services like unlimited bottles of cold water, yardage books and range balls — and when players purchase a rack rate green fee from the time of re-opening until April 12, forecaddie service is included. Improvements like new tee markers and range furniture also are on tap. “We’re continuing to add new amenities to keep the level of experience at the Classic Club above the typical daily-fee experience,” Rubino said. It still can be windy, but the notion that the Classic Club is the only desert track with wind is crazy. In addition to regular play, the course recently hosted tournaments for the University of Wyoming and the Future Collegians World Tour, and both entities were very pleased with the results. “We can have wind and there’s no disputing that, but we’re not windy every day. You have a much better chance of coming out here and playing it with no wind,” said Rubino. “We did more than 32,000 rounds of golf last year. If we’re as windy as people think we are, we wouldn’t have done 320 rounds of golf.” For more information: (760) 601-3601 or visit classicclubgolf.com.
