![]() No. 17 at PGA West's Stadium Course. Each shot is magnified at the grueling six-day event, where the top 25 players and ties earn PGA Tour cards. No other tournament requires competitors to finish more than 100 holes, and no other tournament is as severe with its consequences — one stroke could mean the difference between being a competitive golfer and, say, a bank teller. Much of Q-School’s history can be linked to the Coachella Valley, which will be hosting the final stage for the 12th time this December. Venues like Mission Hills Country Club and La Quinta Resort & Club have served as proving grounds in the past, though PGA West has almost always been included in the rotation when the tournament has come to the region. That again will be the case in 2008, as players will tee it up on both the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and the Stadium Course. Pete Dye’s famous Stadium layout will have a slightly different look, as many areas of brush bordering the turf on the back nine have been sodded over, and a new, longer tee box of 195 yards has been added on “Alcatraz,” the treacherous par-3 17th hole that calls for a shot to an island green — it’s a mystery whether the Tour will set it up to play that full yardage. Held from Wednesday, Dec. 3, through Monday, Dec. 8, the final stage is open to the public, and admission is free. If you like watching golfers ride an emotional roller coaster, check it out.
