The high life

A glimpse of glamour at five of the most exclusive private clubs around Palm Springs.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: November, 2008

Name: The Vintage Club
Location: Indian Wells
Membership fee: $350,000
Phone: (760) 346-5566
Claim to fame: Open for nearly 30 years, The Vintage Club, which features an 85,000-square-foot clubhouse, is one of the most expensive and exclusive private desert venues. After all, Bill Gates is a member. A pair of Tom Fazio layouts — the Mountain and Desert — are regarded as two of his best. The Desert flatters players with a combination of native landscaping and water features, and the Mountain has a stately links feel.

Name: Bighorn
Location: Palm Desert
Membership fee: $350,000
Phone: (760) 341-4653
Claim to fame: As a past host of the Skins Game, the Samsung World Championship and prime-time events featuring Tiger Woods, Bighorn is a known commodity in the desert’s private scene. In addition to the Fazio-designed Canyons layout and the Arthur Hills-crafted Mountains course, members are able to utilize an exclusive jet service and purchase the works of the club’s personal jeweler, Joseph Goott.

Name: The Madison Club
Location: La Quinta
Membership fee: $200,000
Phone: (760) 777-9320
Claim to fame: Meant to be the crown jewel of the Discovery Land Group’s portfolio, The Madison Club has quickly ascended to the Coachella Valley elite. The course is regarded by some as Fazio’s top desert creation. Range balls are picked up by hand to limit distractions for members while they practice. This club is so posh that it was mentioned on a recent episode of HBO’s “Entourage.”

Name: The Quarry
Location: La Quinta
Membership fee: $150,000
Phone: (760) 777-1100
Claim to fame: The Quarry at La Quinta is consistently ranked as one of America’s top 100 courses in Golf Digest. The Fazio track separates itself from others with its location in an old sand quarry. One of the most notable design features is a 70-foot cascade on the par-5 10th hole, regarded as the highest water feature on any course in the world.

Name: Tradition Golf Club
Location: La Quinta
Membership fee: $175,000
Phone: (760) 564-3355
Claim to fame: Of the eight desert courses with an Arnold Palmer Design imprint, Tradition is the most exclusive, with a maximum golf membership allowance of less than 300. Lushly conditioned, the layout is in a tranquil setting, and it also has a nine-hole par-3 course designed by Palmer.

Readers Feedback:

I love your magazine but it's always a "hit or miss" to try to catch a current issue at a golf store. Especially since my local one doesn't carry it and the closest one that does is over 50 miles away. Your website is nice and well laid out. I just wish that I could subscribe to this magazine. The internet is nice, I still enjoy having the magazine better. Thanks for your great work and articles.
