The Skins Game is the most established and successful of the so-called Silly Season events that dot the year-end professional golf calendar. But that doesn’t mean the Thanksgiving weekend event is set in its ways. It has been played at eight different locations over its 25 years, and each year the field changes. But its current home, the Indian Wells Golf Resort, couldn’t be happier with its tenant. Last year, the 25th edition of the Skins Game, formally known as the LG Skins Game, served as the official coming-out party for the facility’s Celebrity Course, a flower-adorned track designed by Clive Clark that opened in late 2006. The course was part of one of the biggest golf facility renovations in Coachella Valley history. “I think it definitely exposed the course to the general public unlike anything else we could have done and it will hopefully do as well this year,” General Manager Jeff Lessig said. This year’s event has a typically intriguing field. Two-time defending champion Stephen Ames will be on hand to defend his crown. And one of the most successful players ever to emerge from Asia, K.J. Choi, is also on the list. But the biggest buzz is for two golfers who most of the golf public knows from their first names: Phil and Rocco, whose last names are Mickelson and Mediate. “We’re very excited about their presence and hopefully they’ll breathe even more excitement into this year’s event,” Lessig said. “Mickelson is the No. 2 player in the world and Rocco is one of the game’s great personalities.” The foursome will play the Celebrity’s front nine on Saturday, Nov. 29 and complete the back nine the following day, vying for a $1 million purse. ABC will televise the event.
