And, both sites have hosted the U.S. Open. Then there’s the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, which utilizes four courses in the Coachella Valley to bring together pros, amateurs and celebrities for five rounds of fun and competition. Bob Hope’s immense contributions to the tournament and golf earned him enshrinement in the World Golf Hall of Fame. Now another Hall of Famer is proud to do his part to keep Hope’s legend and legacy of charitable giving and community spirit alive. “I thought the world of Bob Hope and spent many priceless hours with him on and off the golf course,” said Arnold Palmer, 79, who is hosting this month’s 50th edition of the event. Palmer’s influence on the game justifies his regal nickname of The King, and he ruled the desert tournament during his heyday. Palmer won the Hope a record five times and played in it 42 times, both more than anyone else. He won the first tournament in 1960, and his 1973 triumph was the last of his 62 PGA Tour victories. But even golf’s royalty bows to the memory of Hope and his accomplishments. “I consider it a great honor to follow in the footsteps of Bob Hope as host of this wonderful tournament,” Palmer said. In the pages that follow, we’ll take you back to the 10 greatest years in Hope Classic history. Plus, another trip down memory lane reveals just how dominant Tiger Woods has been at Torrey Pines for the Buick Invitational. Finally, one of Riviera’s most esteemed members, Amy Alcott, shares her thoughts on the course and the Northern Trust Open.
