BEST PLACE TO TEST YOUR GAME Coachella Valley: PGA West, Stadium Course (Pictured)A biennial site for PGA Tour Qualifying School, La Quinta’s Stadium Course doesn’t even need the added pressure of that event to boast one of the most treacherous layouts in the country. San Diego: Carlton Oaks Golf Club As participants in the recent “Hardest Tournament Ever” can attest, Santee’s Carlton Oaks can be brutal. It’s long and has water hazards and sand traps that can often seem downright magnetic. Los Angeles: Lost Canyons Golf Club There are no island greens or comically built bunkers at 36-hole Lost Canyons in Simi Valley, but handling either the Sky or Shadow Course is very challenging thanks to mammoth elevation changes and narrow landing areas. Inland Empire: Oak Valley Golf Club Oak Valley is tough to top, as it’s an annual site for the second stage of PGA Tour Q-School. Orange County: Mission Viejo Country Club It’s a private venue, but how can any course nicknamed “Mission Impossible” not earn this honor? BEST MONUMENT San Diego: Rolex clocktowers at Torrey Pines Golf Course (Pictured)Every facility that hosts a U.S. Open is given a stately Rolex clocktower — Torrey Pines has two. They’re memorable and functional, also reminding golfers of how long before they tee off. Orange County: Payne Stewart statue at Coyote Hills Golf Course It’s been 10 years since the PGA Tour star passed away. Stewart, who served as a consultant in the design of the course, is fondly remembered with a bronze statue near the clubhouse. Los Angeles: Ben Hogan statue at Riviera Country Club It’s called “Hogan’s Alley” for a reason, and visitors can find out why when they read the inscription below Ben’s likeness. BEST EXECUTIVE COURSE Orange County: Aliso Creek Inn The only golf course in Laguna Beach, Aliso Creek Inn is a scenic par-32 test with three sets of tees. It’s no pushover. San Diego: Tecolote Canyon Golf Course How many executive venues can boast Sam Snead and Robert Trent Jones as course designers? Small, often severe greens at the San Diego layout can be challenging and fun for all golfers. Los Angeles: Vista Valencia Golf Course Vista Valencia has variety, with holes ranging from 81 to 452 yards. Tour pro Jason Gore holds the course record — a 52 on the par-61 track. Coachella Valley: Cimarron Golf Resort, Pebble Course Short courses don’t get much more beautiful than this — thanks to award-winning architect John Fought. BEST PAR-3 COURSE Los Angeles: The Links at Terranea Architect Todd Eckenrode crafted a seaside gem in Rancho Palos Verdes that features breathtaking views and intricate routing that makes even the best players think longer about club selection thanks to swirling coastal breezes. San Diego: Reidy Creek Golf Course A double green, masterfully framed tee shots and ornate landscaping make Escondido’s Reidy Creek a unique option among par-3 venues. Orange County: Hyatt Newport Beach Back Bay Course It’s one of the coolest locations for a course in Orange County — right on the way to Newport Beach — and in tune with the laid-back vibe of the area. Central California: Monarch Dunes Golf Club, The Challenge This Nipomo course has likely gained more notoriety for its unique number of holes (12), but it’s absolutely stunning, retaining the old-school feel of its par-72 brother. BEST BUZZ San Diego: Barona Creek Golf Club (Pictured)Regarded as one of the best courses to open in Southern California this decade, Barona Creek has a fun layout and an on-site casino. Los Angeles: Rustic Canyon Golf Course The Moorpark layout has been lauded for its adaptation to the natural terrain and its affordability among daily-fee venues. Inland Empire: Redhawk Golf Club There are lots of popular venues in the I.E., but this one is the most buzzworthy thanks to an overall strong facility and a stout layout. Orange County: TIE — Tijeras Creek Golf Club and Talega Golf Club Rancho Santa Margarita’s Tijeras Creek has become a favorite thanks to two distinct nines. San Clemente’s Talega is generating momentum thanks to new management and lower green fees. |
