The Hot 100

From the best courses, clubhouses and resorts to the best golf monuments and places to walk in the footsteps of local legends, here’s our annual list of everything we love about golf in Southern California.

BEST EXPERIENCE

San Diego: Maderas Golf Club (Pictured)
A country-club-like setting and a heck of a golf course can be found at Maderas in Poway.

Orange County: Tustin Ranch Golf Club
“Public play, private feel” has been the facility’s slogan for some time, and it’s true thanks to great service and a fun, resort-style layout.

Los Angeles: Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort
If for nothing else than escaping the hubbub of the city of Los Angeles, Industry Hills is a great experience thanks to two superb courses and a posh new resort.

Coachella Valley: Desert Willow Golf Resort
Scenery, tranquility, convenience, variety — they’re all par for the course at the 36-hole Palm Desert venue.

Inland Empire: Links at Summerly
There’s just something about playing a layout that seeks to embody the old-style linksland courses of the British Isles. And those courses don’t have sumptuous barbeque waiting in the clubhouse.

BEST COURSE TO TAKE YOUR KIDS

Los Angeles: Heartwell Golf Course
The holes aren’t too long; plus, you can tell your children they’re playing the same holes Tiger Woods did as a youngster.

San Diego: Welk Resort
Few facilities have both an executive course and a par-3 course — not to mention a tranquil mountain setting and instruction clinics for juniors.

Orange County: David L. Baker Memorial Golf Course
When you’re done playing golf, take the little ones to Mile Square Park.

BEST VALUE

Orange County: San Clemente Golf Course (Pictured)
Even non-residents can play this historic coastal track for about $30. That leaves some extra cash to enjoy outstanding food and drink at Irons in the Fire.

San Diego: Pala Mesa Golf Resort
One of the hidden gems of San Diego County golf is complemented by a resort that offers affordable rates, cozy accommodations and a variety of packages.

Los Angeles: TIE, LA City and LA County systems
It’s tough to pick a top value among either system, so why not just check out any of the courses and have some fun while saving some dough — there are more than 30 options.

Inland Empire: Jurupa Hills Country Club
Plush, tree-lined tracks are tough to find in the Inland Empire, making Riverside’s Jurupa Hills Country Club a welcome change of pace — not to mention a bargain, with all green fees less than $33.

BEST ACCESSORY TO HAVE WITH YOU ON THE GOLF COURSE

GPS rangefinders
The ads are true — using one of these devices, like those offered by GolfBuddy, really does save time and makes a round more enjoyable. Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it.

BEST SCENERY

Inland Empire: Oak Quarry Golf Club (Pictured)
The par-3 14th hole says it all. If your jaw doesn’t drop, check to make sure your lips aren’t sealed together.

San Diego: Mt. Woodson Golf Club
Nowhere in San Diego County is a tranquil mountainscape more mesmerizing than at Ramona’s Mt. Woodson.

Orange County: Resort at Pelican Hill
Tom Fazio’s courses have a penchant for eye-popping aesthetics, and his Newport Coast duo definitely fits that bill.

Coachella Valley: Indian Wells Golf Resort
The Clive Clark- and John Fought-designed courses are so pretty that they could be mistaken for botanical gardens.

Los Angeles: Trump National Golf Club
In addition to the lush terrain and blinding white bunkers, the view from the back tee box on No. 18 is an awesome finalé.

Central California: Sandpiper Golf Club
The Santa Barbara staple is probably the most nationally renowned course on the “American Riviera” for good reason — check out the views.

BEST COURSE THAT'S WORTH THE DRIVE

San Diego: Woods Valley Golf Club
Valley Center is one of San Diego County’s northernmost points, but it’s home to Woods Valley, a phenomenal test from the tips.

Central California: Rancho San Marcos Golf Course
There’s not much north above the bustling coastline of Santa Barbara except for this Robert Trent Jones Jr. masterpiece.

Inland Empire: CrossCreek Golf Club
The only Temecula golf course located on the rural western side of the 15 freeway, CrossCreek feels miles from civilization despite being close to the wineries and casinos of the area.
