BEST MUNICIPAL COURSE Coachella Valley: SilverRock Resort (Pictured)Owned by the city of La Quinta, SilverRock is a tough track but definitely one of the best in the desert. It’s part of the rotation for the PGA Tour’s annual stop in the Coachella Valley. Orange County: Black Gold Golf Club The city of Yorba Linda owns this Arthur Hills gem, which has tough greens, spectacular views and stellar amenities. It’s not your average “muni.” Los Angeles: Brookside Golf Club The facility that doubles as a parking lot for Rose Bowl events boasts two of the most interesting and historic courses in the Los Angeles area. San Diego: Torrey Pines Golf Course How many municipal venues can say they’ve hosted a U.S. Open as well as PGA and LPGA tour events? The South is a brute but the North is a more accessible and comfortable layout. BEST PRACTICE FACILITY Orange County: Oak Creek Golf Club Do the math: a nine-acre landing area, 65 turf stations and three practice putting greens help Irvine’s Oak Creek reign supreme. San Diego: Stadium Golf Center Whether it’s early in the morning, lunchtime or just before closing time at 10 p.m., Stadium Golf is almost always bustling, and with good reason — the range is huge and the short-game area is top-notch. Los Angeles: Tom Barber Golf Center The son of 1961 PGA Championship winner Jerry Barber has one of the top ranges in the Southland, especially after he recently installed the new PowerTee driving range system. Inland Empire: East Valley Golf Club The Beaumont facility’s expansive range, two practice putting greens and chipping area create a warm-up heaven. Coachella Valley: Classic Club The two-sided driving range and sprawling short-game area allow ample space to hone your game and enjoy views of the Chocolate Mountains. BEST BIRD'S EYE VIEW Inland Empire: Journey at Pechanga, sixth hole (Pictured)This par 4 can stretch as long as 488 yards, but plays much shorter thanks to a massive drop from the tee. After hitting your drive, have a stopwatch ready to see how long your ball stays in the air. Orange County: Coyote Hills Golf Course, seventh hole You can see most of Fullerton from the elevated tee on this short but exhilarating par 4. San Diego: Steele Canyon Golf Club, third hole on Ranch nine The long par 4 is aptly nicknamed “Parachute.” The course has many amazing views, but a 200-foot drop from the tee makes this the best. Los Angeles: Lost Canyons Golf Club, second hole on Sky Course The shot from the back tees on this 220-yard par 3 is quite intimidating, but ease any nerves by soaking in the panoramic views of the Santa Susana Mountains. BEST FAMILY-OWNED FACILITY Los Serranos Golf and Country Club The Kramers are a class act all the way and make both regulars and new visitors feel right at home at the Chino Hills venue. BEST TEACHER Jamie Mulligan The PGA Professional and Virginia Country Club’s COO teaches some of the game’s brightest young talent — like John Merrick and John Mallinger — as well as crafty veterans like Paul Goydos and John Cook. BEST PLACE TO TAKE A CLIENT TO LUNCH AND GOLF San Diego: The Crossings at Carlsbad (Pictured)One of the top lunch spots in northern San Diego County is Canyons Restaurant, which has old favorites like a Reuben, delectable dishes like Calamari angel hair pasta and a large drink menu. Orange County: Oak Creek Golf Club This cozy facility is conveniently located in Irvine and offers great food and a top high-end, daily-fee experience. Coachella Valley: Desert Willow Golf Resort Conveniently located near the 10 freeway in Palm Desert, Desert Willow has one of the most serene outdoor dining settings in the Coachella Valley and two outstanding layouts. Inland Empire: Eagle Glen Golf Club Sporting one of the most opulent clubhouses in the Inland Empire, Corona’s Eagle Glen has a copious menu and is convenient to most major points of Riverside County. Los Angeles: Trump National Golf Club Nothing says you mean business like taking a client to the Donald’s turf. |
