![]() When: January 25-31. Where: Torrey Pines Golf Course, La Jolla. Purse: $5.3 million. Background: A PGA Tour fixture since 1952, the tournament has benefited by the presence of Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, whose appearance this year is in doubt. It’s also been the most highly rated non-major golf event on network television 10 out of the past 15 years. Noted international players Luke Donald, Padraig Harrington, Retief Goosen and Camilo Villegas played last year, and Vijay Singh and Sergio Garcia typically tee it up. Last year: Rain marred the first three days, cutting into spectator attendance, but the real disaster was John Rollins’ final round. Holding a three-stroke lead with five holes to play, Rollins bogeyed the 14th and 16th and missed a 12-foot birdie on the 18th. Meanwhile, Nick Watney (pictured above) caught fire with birdies on two of the last three holes to clinch his second PGA Tour victory. What’s new: Less than two weeks before the tournament is scheduled to tee off, Farmers Insurance has agreed to be the title sponsor for one year. The event is now known as the Farmers Insurance Open. Most pressing question: Will Woods show up? While it looks bleak, organizers and fans have their fingers crossed. Tickets: A weeklong badge is $105 in advance and $120 at the gate; daily tickets are $26 and $32; and daily passes for seniors age 60 and over are $16 and $21. More information: sdopen.com.
