![]() Jerry West brings savvy and star power to the Nothern Trust Open (PHOTO: Challenge Roddie). Where: Riviera Country Club, Pacific Palisades. Purse: $6.3 million. Background: The second oldest non-major event on the PGA Tour started in 1926. Last year: Phil Mickelson shot 63s in the first and third rounds and led by four shots heading into the final round. But an inability to control his driver turned that lead into a two-shot deficit with three holes to play. He rebounded with back-to-back birdies to regain the lead, and after Steve Stricker missed two 12-foot birdie putts on the final two holes, Mickelson’s tough par on the 18th gave him the victory for the second consecutive year. What’s new: Jerry West. In an effort to spur continued growth, the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce, which has run the event since its inception, expanded its partnership with the PGA Tour. West was named as executive chairman. Most pressing question: Will they come? For the first time in several years, the event doesn’t come the week before the Accenture Match Play Championship. Many top players have used the stop at Riviera to get their games in shape. This year, the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am is sandwiched between the two, but officials hope the allure of Riviera will continue to be a strong draw. Tickets: Practice round, $20 in advance, $30 at gate; competitive rounds, $35 and $50; weekly badges, $100 and $125. More information: northerntrustopen.com.
