![]() Age: 32 Current Handicap: 12 Lowest handicap: 9 Plays: Once or twice a month Practices: Once or twice a week Ailment: I play a lot of afternoon golf on a course that gets pretty windy. My problem is that I always come up short on my approach shots on holes into the wind. No matter how well I hit it, my ball balloons up in the air and plugs well short of the flag. I've tried hitting an extra club, but it doesn't help much. I can't imagine hitting an extra two or three clubs to get it there. What do you suggest? Prescription: My first suggestion is to check your hand and ball position. Chances are you have the ball too far forward in your stance. This means that you are setting up for a golf shot under normal conditions. Ideally, you need to play a knockdown shot in the wind. Try moving the ball back in your stance. Choke down slightly and put a little more weight on your left side. This should help create a better impact position with the club slightly delofted and allow the ball to start off lower and maintain that line. Whether I'm chipping or hitting a full shot, I hate hitting shots off the tight lies. I always seem to skull the ball. What do you think about when you have to play a ball off a tight lie? Prescription: For chipping, keep your weight on your left side and move your hands slightly forward. Also, keep your body and head still throughout the shot. Play a bump-and-run shot that will allow you to keep the club lower to the ground on the backswing and follow-through. This should help with the common mistake of deceleration, which can result in a fat or thin shot. Use the same concept for full swings. I like to play a knockdown shot off tight lies. Choke down slightly, lean a bit more toward the target, take a shorter swing and finish with the butt of your club pointing toward the ground instead of the sky. SG |
