Magic number

Aldila’s VooDoo shaft is becoming popular among professionals WHO are using the colorful product to add to their victory totals.

VooDoo's rib structure makes its strength and stiffness 80 percent greater than conventional graphite shafts.
It’s fitting that the hottest new shaft on the PGA Tour is named VooDoo, because whatever Aldila Golf is putting inside the graphite shaft must be magical.

Within a few weeks of its unveiling on the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour and European PGA Tour, the VooDoo helped earn victories for players on each circuit. Five of the top 20 finishers at the 2008 PGA Championship used the shaft, and it helped carry Boo Weekley to an undefeated run during the Ryder Cup.

That success, and Aldila’s proven track record, resulted in the VooDoo being one of the most anticipated retail products of last year. In September, the VooDoo was made available to consumers in several club manufacturers’ products.

The magic behind the VooDoo is Aldila’s S-Core, or stabilized core, technology. A carbon stabilization rib running the length of the shaft increases distance and provides accuracy with each swing.

John Oldenburg, Aldila’s vice president of engineering, said the new technology “dramatically stabilizes the shaft’s cross-section through the use of an internal carbon-fiber rib system.”

The rib structure makes the VooDoo’s strength and stiffness 80 percent greater than conventional graphite shafts, Oldenburg said. That increased stability maximizes energy transfer, which results in more distance.

The magic apparently isn’t wearing off anytime soon. According to Aldila, the VooDoo was the most-used shaft for woods and hybrids at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and Mayakoba Golf Classic in February, and Accenture winner Geoff Ogilvy reportedly used the shaft en route to his victory.

Including its other shafts, most notably the NV, which Y.E. Yang reportedly used to win the Honda Classic in March, Aldila is among the most-used brand in woods and hybrids on the PGA Tour, according to the Darrell Survey.
