![]() The MATT System sets ChampionshipFitting apart. What separates golf from other sports is the ability for recreational players to enjoy the same venues as the pros. This is particularly true in Southern California, where amateurs can tee it up on PGA Tour tracks like Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego and La Quinta’s SilverRock Resort. Irvine’s ChampionshipFitting, which opened in August, has brought that professional-level atmosphere to the realm of golf equipment, offering everyone the same clubfitting experience as TaylorMade staff touring pros. “The way consumers acquire golf clubs has changed dramatically,” said ChampionshipFitting founder Pat Mateer. “The technology now available to fit equipment around a particular player’s golf game is fairly revolutionary.” ChampionshipFitting utilizes the same technology as “The Kingdom,” the state-of-the-art fitting and testing facility at TaylorMade’s Carlsbad headquarters. The centerpiece is the MATT system (Motion Analysis Technology by TaylorMade), which generates 3-D swing composites using high-speed cameras and a body suit — the same infrastructure employed in video games and movies. “Seeing yourself on screen as a 3-D animated figure is really cool,” said Steve Cook, ChampionshipFitting’s PGA Director of Golf. Not only does the output look cool, it’s vital in helping you and your clubfitter determine the optimal equipment settings based on a variety of statistics. Once enough data is gathered, the facility’s plethora of shaft and clubhead combinations, which include the latest TaylorMade offerings like R9 woods and Burner irons, is assembled to a golfer’s specifications. Then comes the next high-tech step — analyzing your performance results with the new equipment on FlightScope, the world’s first Doppler tracking golf radar. That means your shots are input in the same data utilized in missile defense and weather tracking. After the swing analysis, golfers go through a similar advanced fitting in the Rossa Putter Lab, which breaks down variables to determine the most ideal loft, shaft length and style of putter. The experience at ChampionshipFitting is fun, personalized and efficient. Getting fit doesn’t take all day, nor is the cost astronomical. The studio has a relaxed vibe, as Mateer even sprung to have Firestone Double Barrel Ale on tap. Each session includes a locker, gift package and refreshments. After the fitting session is complete, individual club orders are submitted, and TaylorMade clubs are custom fit to exact specifications and delivered promptly to your doorstep. More good news — your equipment is going to cost about the same (and sometimes less) than it would off a golf store rack.
