A friend indeed

Golf Buddy’s line of hand-held rangefinders makes getting around the course a little easier.

By Joel BeersPublished: August, 2008

Everyone likes a round of golf with a good friend. You can catch up on old times, make some friendly wagers and tell tall tales.

But how often can you truly say that playing with a buddy has actually made you understand your game better?

The makers of Golf Buddy think their hand-held rangefinder can do just that — you just have to pay a few hundred dollars for the pleasure of this friend’s acquaintance.

“This isn’t some golf gadget that you might buy, use a few times and then stick in your bag and seldom think of it again,” says Neville Hong, chief marketing officer for the Cerritos-based company. “Once players begin using Golf Buddy, utilizing all its features and realizing what an incredible tool it is, they don’t ever want to go back to playing without it. They become dependent upon it.”

The most obvious asset of any rangefinder is providing precise distance to the front, center and back of a green, as well as how far every bunker and body of water is from your ball. Golf Buddy incorporates that feature for 14,000 courses worldwide.

Regardless of where your ball lands on the course, you’ll never have to hunt for a sprinkler head again to gauge the distance to the green, or any hazards between you and that destination.

That doesn’t make Golf Buddy unique. But what is distinctive about his company’s product, notes Hong, is that once you buy a Golf Buddy, there are no fees for annual usage or course downloads.

“There are no downloads and no subscription fees for our service,” Hong says. “You can walk into a pro shop, buy a Golf Buddy and begin using it minutes later on the golf course.”

Golf Buddy is also very easy to use, with very few buttons and no hard-to-decipher software instructions.

But Golf Buddy is more than a distance finder. It also allows you to track the distance of every shot, meaning you can receive immediate information on how far you’re hitting every club. In other words, you no longer have to fool yourself that you can hit your 4-iron 200 yards. Golf Buddy will tell you, and keeps track of hundreds of shots so you can constantly reference your progress.

Golf Buddy will continue to update its course library (its units can hold up to 20,000 courses), and it allows golfers to map courses that might not come pre-installed.

Another Golf Buddy feature is its ability to change the way a green looks based on a golfer’s position.

“If you’re coming at a green directly from the front, it will look one way on your screen, but if you’re coming in at an angle, the screen will shift to reflect that view,” Hong says.

Additionally, Golf Buddy is designed with automatic course and hole recognition. “The minute you turn it on, it already knows where you are, and what hole you’re playing,” he adds.

This month, Golf Buddy unveils its third model: the Tour edition, which features a backlit color screen that can be viewed in the most glaring of light conditions.

As an added bonus, Golf Buddy uses a lithium polymer battery, which holds a charge far longer than other lithium batteries, Hong says. “That’s ideal for traveling golfers who don’t have time to charge their units.”

And, if the battery does grow weak, Golf Buddy can be powered by triple-A batteries in a pinch.

“It takes all the guesswork out of a round and really helps with course management,” says Hong. “It’s one  accessory that can really help lower your scores and improve your game.”

The Golf Buddy Plus has a retail price of $279.99, with the Golf Buddy Pro retailing for $349.99. The Golf Buddy Tour sells for $429.99.
