CARLSBAD—In a move that is certain to produce more than a few snickers, but that could turn out to be a stroke of marketing genius, TaylorMade Golf recently unveiled a new product line of metal woods, rescue clubs, irons and other products under the name RocketBallz.
The designation originated as an impromptu jagged scrawl on the metal sole of a prototype rescue club, but it caught the fancy of TaylorMade’s tech types, who saw it as whimsical, memorable and evocative of the line’s selling points: increased ball speed and distance.
Also, when the long-hitting pro Dustin Johnson tested the prototype rescue, he repeatedly described the results as “like a rocket,” according to TaylorMade officials.
The RocketBallz irons also are being touted for their ability to launch the ball high and far, using “trampoline” technology similar to that employed in TaylorMade’s metal woods, which also are said to provide better control and feel.
The RocketBallz clubs are less expensive than TaylorMade’s top-of-the-line R11S line, which has been updated for 2012 (the RocketBallz driver, for example, will sell for $299, while the R11S will cost $499). However, TaylorMade officials say that Camilo Villegas and Jason Day, among others, are expected to play the RocketBallz driver on the PGA Tour in 2012.
As arresting as the entire RocketBallz logo is (in green, with the now-familiar white livery on the top of the metal woods), TaylorMade doesn’t apply it everywhere. On clubs, balls, clothing, bags, hats and a variety of accessories, expect to see it also represented as a stylized RBZ.
