(Photo: Eddie Meeks) The master clubfitter at the Fullerton facility that also makes clubs and offers instruction is sought by some of the biggest names in the long-driving field, including reigning world champion Mike Dobbyn. But there’s one thing he won’t do. “I don’t lie to my customers,” said Croghan, who opened Orange County Golf Technology in January. “I will go out of my way to talk someone out of doing something that I think isn’t right for his game. If a 25-handicapper thinks that the newest driver is what he needs, but if his swing isn’t ready for it, I’ll tell him.” While high-tech machines are a big part of the fitting process, Croghan said observation is also crucial. “We never do just a straight fitting,” he said. “We also look at a player’s stance and his grip and every other aspect of his game. That’s the only way a fitting can truly optimize a club to a player.” If new clubs aren’t necessary, recommendations on new lie angles or lofts might be made. But if a new club or shaft is the prescription, staff members can custom build a club or order the components and assemble them in-house. “When you walk into a golf store or pro shop and buy a club without a proper fitting, there’s a 98 percent chance it’s not going to fit you,” Croghan said. “Something isn’t going to be right because that club, regardless of the manufacturer, was not optimized with you in mind. That’s why an accurate fitting is so important.” The company is currently offering a clubfitting/lesson special: Bring in your driver for an evaluation and receive an hour golf lesson for $75.
