A golf ball cleaning device and a course range finder

Golf ball Cleaning device is stylish and convenient

Brent Hollows doesn't mind that his life has turned into a cliché, the one about necessity being the mother of invention.

His invention is Ball Brite, a personal golf ball cleaner that Hollows and his Mission Viejo-based company of the same name are confident will send the common golf towel back where it belongs: near your kitchen or bathroom sink.

The necessity came two years ago when Hollows walked up to the second green at Tijeras Creek Golf Club without a towel.

For Hollows, who says keeping his golf balls clean helps him "focus and play better," the prospect of lining up a putt with a dirty ball was unthinkable.

"I was thinking of some way I could clean the ball when I just got the idea to grab a headcover off my driver," he said. "I poured a little bit of water in the neck and then pulled it through my belt loop. The inside stayed wet my entire round and I didn't have to worry about a towel getting dirty, or grabbing it from the cart every time I stepped onto the green."

Ball Brite's insulated sleeve stays wet inside but the exterior stays dry. Balls go in dirty and come out clean, with only one tablespoon of water needed for the job.

"It's a great product that looks both high-end and professional and it really works," said Hollows, a New Zealand native who moved to the United States in 1982.

Ball Brite comes in five colors and is small enough to fit in your pocket. But it's large enough for a logo, which makes Ball Brite enticing for golf tournaments looking to attract corporate sponsors and spice up their gift bags.

"It's a durable product that also looks stylish and professional," Hollows said. "Best of all, it works. I think we'll be everywhere by the end of 2008."

Golfbuddy devices remove guesswork

The GolfBuddy Pro and Tour rangefinders go the distance for players who want to improve their scores. The devices give yardages throughout the course - from greens, bunkers, water hazards and more. Players also can customize target points and utilize the built-in, score-tracking module.

There are no annual fees and courses are pre-loaded, with a storage capacity of 20,000 layouts. The rangefinders, which come in a waterproof case, also have automatic course and hole recognition, so there's no need to punch in what hole you're playing.

The Pro sells for $349.99; the Tour for $429.99. Find out more at (877) 607-4653 or gpsgolfbuddy.com.
