It's Show Time!

Gizmos, gadgets and good ideas from the recent PGA Merchandise Show in Las Vegas.

ACCU-LENGTH
Junior golf clubs that grow with your child
I don’t know about the other 4,000 industry professionals who attended the Fall PGA Merchandise Show in Las Vegas, but the best new idea I saw was the Accu-Length Junior Golf System. Accu-Length clubs have a shaft spacer that allows clubs to be lengthened. As your child grows, he or she gets custom-fit clubs without having to buy a new set every year. Sure, many of us learned to play the game using old adult clubs that were cut down. But golfers today are hitting 350-yard drives because of improved club technology. Now juniors have some new science of their own. Accu-Length clubs can be purchased separately (irons $40, woods $50) or in sets ($200). Check them out at GolfSmith or visit www.acculength.com.

TURFTEE
Say goodbye to rubber tees on practice mats
I’m not fond of hitting off synthetic driving range mats, but sometimes there’s no choice. Hitting my driver off those rubber tees that never seem to be the right height is even worse. That problem is solved with TurfTee, an unbreakable tee designed to penetrate synthetic mats with a retractable steel pin. To ensure that your impact-resistant tee doesn’t end up in the middle of the driving range, it comes with a leash and holder that you place un-der the hitting mat. TurfTee is available in two sizes that are sold two to a package for about $15 at www.turftee.com.

GREEN FRIENDLY BELT
Handy green repair tool and ball mark
This new piece of apparel is almost James Bond-like. It’s a green repair tool and ball marker hidden in a belt. And if you never use the precision-fitted golf tools as they were intended, that’s OK, the Green Friendly Belt is a terrific conversation starter. The belt retails for about $50 and is available in brown and black. Green Friendly Belts can be personalized for charity events. Visit www.greenfriendlygolf.com.

LIGHTED GOLF HAT
Don’t get left in the dark on the golf course
If you’re a twilight golfer this time of year, you may want to consider buying this PantherVision lighted headgear so you don’t have to play the last hole in darkness. Designed for hands- free lighting, the hat has two LEDs implanted in the front edge of the brim that are wired to a battery power unit with a switch on the back of the cap. The cap sells for $29. Check it out at www.panthervision.com.
