Evergreen offers creative ideas for Southland yards

By Joel BeersPublished: July, 2008

Ten years ago, it was anyone’s guess whether artificial putting greens would catch on like personal computers or go the way of Cabbage Patch Kids. But more than a decade after companies began marketing synthetic turf to businesses and private homeowners, thousands have been installed throughout the United States.

Until now, the turf made by Mirage Putting Greens International hasn’t made major inroads into one of the market’s biggest regions: Southern California.

Jeff Searcy hopes to change that.

Searcy, whose Oregon-based Evergreen Outdoor Concepts is one of Mirage’s elite dealers, is expanding into the Southland. The company, which also offers waterless lawns and a range of weather-proof products designed for outdoor entertainment, opened a Palm Springs office in June. The Southern California presence gives Evergreen Outdoor Concepts “as far as I know, the largest distributorship of synthetic putting greens and waterless lawns in the country,” Searcy said. “We’ve got from Seattle to San Diego.”

Mirage Turf has been used in more than 25,000 putting greens and synthetic lawns around the world, Searcy said, ranging from cruise ships and Las Vegas hotels to three-hole putting greens in backyards.

Evergreen also installs waterless lawns and outdoor waterfalls, in addition to offering a full line of weather-proof, outdoor products ranging from pool tables to television sets for hardcore home entertainers.

“The intent of going into this was to provide people looking to redo their yard one company to work with,” said Searcy, who has worked with Mirage Turf since 2002 and whose background combines marketing and landscaping. “We look at every installation as something more than just a putting green aspect. Maybe you want an outdoor bar or a TV that will last through extreme temperatures outside or something that will still work even if it’s knocked into a pool. We can help you decide on every element of your backyard entertaining.”
