I’d heard a lot of good things about Industry Hills’ two golf courses and revamped resort the past couple of years. Among them: nice layout and spectacular scenery. Being skeptical, I had to check it out. OK. I’m convinced. The views are absolutely gorgeous. There was Ashley, Ivy and Milka at the second hole; Jennifer and Heather at No. 4; Denise, Lora and Brigitte at the seventh hole; and Maureen and Jasmine at No. 13. And those were only some of the names I jotted down in my white reporter’s notebook. (Note to self: Remember a little black book next time.) But while they and their Playboy Girls of Golf companions added to the visual pleasure at a number of tee boxes, they also contributed to some deer-in-the-headlights moments prior to teeing off. But who cares? It’s all part of the fun and games at a Playboy Scramble. This one, in early September on the Eisenhower Course at Industry Hills Golf Course at Pacific Palms, was one of 25 qualifying events held around the country this spring and summer. Winners of the events are invited to Las Vegas for the semifinals Oct. 17 at the Revere Golf Club, with The Palms Casino Hotel serving as the primary host. The top five gross and net winners from the Las Vegas event are then invited to the finals at Industry Hills in March, with one of the fringe benefits being a party at the Playboy Mansion. “You can either go out there and have a great time and enjoy the atmosphere, or you can take it a little more seriously and try to win the tournament because of the potential good times down the line,” said Shane Grahn, the tournament director for Playboy Golf in Los Angeles. “Everybody had a blast. A lot of people told me they wanted to be involved next year. I saw lots of smiles on players’ faces.” Count me in the group that was smiling and not taking things too seriously. My best shot of the day was the one taken of me and Deanna Brooks, Playboy’s Miss May 1999 and hostess of the event at Industry Hills. Playboy Scrambles have been held for six years, but this was the first year a qualifying tournament was held in the Los Angeles area. But it won’t be the last. Grahn said that he’ll likely shop around for another venue, but he hinted that Industry Hills has everything the tournament needs to be a success. “Industry Hills is kind of perfect,” he said. “It’s an upscale facility, has two nice courses, lots of space and areas for activities before and after the round, so it’s a great spot for this type of event. We’re going to build on this year and keep it going in L.A. in the years to come.” Al Petersen is an associate editor at Southland Golf.
