It’s up to you to figure out the best path toward better scores and more enjoyment on the course

By Jack BirdPublished: June, 2005

Golf is an individual sport. Everyone has a different swing, and everyone has a different way of approaching the game. Finding out what works best for you comes from instruction, practice and trial and error. Here are some tips to help you get started:

Create a mental plan

Everyone’s different, but most good players prepare before teeing it up. Amateurs should concentrate on enjoying the round to relax and have more fun.

Practice your short game

Take about 40 balls and find a good place to practice pitching, chipping, putting and sand shots.

Take a playing lesson

This option is usually expensive, so discuss with your instructor beforehand what you want to include. Spend this time on the parts of your game you most want to improve and get your instructor’s insight on how best to go about it.

Dress for success

Choose supportive, comfortable shoes and buy loose-fitting clothes that breathe and allow freedom of movement.

Keep it simple

Enjoy your practice time and you’re likely to increase your pleasure on the course. Determine the practice techniques that work best for you through trial and error.
