Southland Golf’s editor and associate publisher, Eric Marson, is undergoing a complete, six-month body transformation to improve his health and golf game. His progress will be updated each month. Eric Marson is beginning to see results in his physique, strength and golf game. He is driving the ball 20 yards farther and we have established a good foundation of overall strength in the first two months even though the workout sessions were sporadic. Six to eight weeks is the normal time to begin seeing changes in your golf game, but you should see an increase in muscular strength within four weeks. Marson can now swing a little harder without the worry of a back injury, and his hips are able to get through the swing faster because of the increase in his core strength and flexibility. The past two months we did an overall body fitness routine. This month I’ll break the sessions into three routines. We’ll work on the upper body on Tuesdays, the lower body on Thursdays and include golf-specific exercises on Saturdays, such as medicine ball throws, balance drills and explosive movements. This routine will continue to build overall strength, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. When performing explosive exercises, don’t use weights that are too heavy and be sure to keep each repetition in good form. One mistake and you may have to wait a few weeks and start from scratch. Marson’s body composition results are not on schedule so we’ll also focus more on eating habits this month. His eating has been better since starting the program, but we’re going to work on making wiser choices when planning meals and also reduce portion sizes. Choosing to split meals when eating out, or saving half of your meal for lunch the next day, is a great start. When eating out, have the waiter or waitress take your plate when you feel full. This will prevent picking at food while others finish. Passing on desert and limiting alcohol consumption also are wise choices. N Mike Hansen can be reached at (949) 251-0533. |
