A slippery slope

Recognizing uneven lies and making the proper adjustments will save you strokes.

By Sandra PalmerPublished: August, 2008

Handling situations where your ball is on a slope or an uneven lie is part of becoming a complete golfer. The best tip I received regarding uneven lies was from the late Harvey Penick, who said: “The ball will tend to go whichever way the ground slopes.” Here are three pointers for right-handers hitting shots from uneven lies:

ABOVE YOUR FEET
1) Grip down on the club.
2) Set yourself to the right of the target, because the ball tends to hook from this lie.
3) Make a smooth swing and focus on keeping your balance.

BELOW YOUR FEET
1) Bend your knees and keep your weight back on your heels.
2) Aim left of the target, since the ball tends to slice from this lie.
3) Stand a little closer to the ball to generate a path that encourages more solid contact.

DOWNHILL LIE
1) Take a club with a bit more loft than you’d normally use.
2) Bend your right knee to help your balance at address.
3) Play the ball back in your stance.

UPHILL LIE

1) Use a longer club than normal.
2) Play the ball forward in your stance.
3) Align your shoulders to the slope, meaning your right
shoulder should be lower than your left. SG
