Smart practice

Your golf game won’t get better without the right preparation.

By Eric LohmanPublished: August, 2008

Watch Lohman's tips for practicing with a purpose.

Watch some warm up stretches to do before your round or practice sessions.
A common thread among good players is that their practice time isn’t wasted. They feel comfortable on the course, because they rarely find themselves hitting a shot they haven’t practiced.

Remember that practice makes permanent, not perfect. Utilize lessons from a PGA instructor between practice and playing. If you don’t, you might pick up bad habits that will only be reinforced over time.

Humans inherently do what is comfortable, whether it’s how we stand, walk, sit in our car or type. It’s the same for sports, especially golf. But the comfortable way isn’t always the correct way. The proper grip, posture and setup are often described by my students as “uncomfortable.”

Don’t fall into that frame of mind. Use these 10 keys to help you get the most out of your practice sessions:

General tips
1) Practice and play in equal amounts.

2) Always stretch first, with a focus on your arms, hamstrings  and core muscles.

3) Utilize drills, aids and launch monitors when applicable.

4) Divide your practice time between short game (100 yards and in) and long game (more than 100 yards). In regards to your short game, devote 25 percent of your time to chipping, 25 percent to pitching and 50 percent to putting.

On the range
5) Start with short swings and work your way to full swings. Save your driver for last, and finish the session by going in reverse.

6) Mix things up. If you have 60 balls, don’t hit 50 wedges. Hit a few shots with each club and go through the whole bag.

7) Put a club or two on the ground for alignment and ball position.

8) At the end of your session, hit shots you’ve been struggling with or shots you might encounter on the course that day.

On the practice green
9) Fine-tune your stroke with a putting arc, and use other drills to improve accuracy and distance control.

10) Chip and pitch from a variety of positions to get a feel for what shots to hit from different distances and lies.  SG
