![]() Here's a super-easy task to check off if you're a part of a golf-crazy couple with a bucket list: Play the Memorial Weekend Couples Golf Classic at Sycuan Resort in San Diego. Sycuan, which boasts two championship courses, is no newbie when it comes to holding high-turnout tournaments. The facility stages more than 300 events per year for men's and women's clubs, associations, business groups, charity fund-raisers and the like, according to marketing director Rick Tibbitts. But over the May 23-26 weekend, the resort will do something it's never done before: hold an open tournament for couples looking to test their games against their peers and vie for bragging rights, awards and prizes. And have a grand time in the company of couples who enjoy fun competition. "Both courses will be in play for the weekend, and the style of event should appeal to a wide range of handicaps," Tibbitts said. With Sycuan's track record of popular tournaments, many of which have the vibe of an invitational, there's every reason to believe the Memorial Weekend Couples Golf Classic will become an annual event. Having "classic" in the title says it all. The event's format is male-female best-ball gross and net over 36 holes of stroke play. The field is being limited to just 36 couples to ensure the best player experience possible. Scoring always is an unknown, but having the best golf experience already is in the bag, thanks to the enjoyable challenges presented by both the Oak Glen and Willow Glen courses. Both of these mature, par-72 courses at the foothills of the picturesque Dehesa Valley were redesigned in 1980 by Ted Robinson Sr. "With the winter weather we just had in which we experienced much more rain than normal, and that rain following our overseed season, the course is in the best condition in the last 25 years that I can recall," Tibbitts said. Couples will find many amenities and rewards built into tournament fees of $749 per person, including three nights deluxe room accommodations at the resort's lodge, two days of golf for two (including cart), unlimited range balls, breakfast buffet and lunch both days, and Sunday night dinner with an open beer and wine bar. Rounding out the package are awards, raffle opportunities and tee prizes, plus $100 in resort credit that can be used at any resort facility - including the restaurant, the pro shop, the Primrose Spa, and even at Sycuan Casino, which is located three miles east of the lodge/golf course complex. The resort is complete with a clubhouse that offers an award-winning restaurant and a well-stocked pro shop. Couples can get even more out of the tournament package by arriving early Friday to get in sessions at the facility's many practice areas (large driving range, two big putting greens and a short-game area) or Sycuan's Pine Glen, a par-3 executive course that's no pushover and a local favorite.
