Bob Hope Chrysler Classic returns to desert

By Eli MillerPublished: January, 2008

Beginning Wednesday, a field of PGA Tour professionals and celebrities will tee it up in Palm Springs for the 49th annual Bob Hope Chrysler Classic Hosted by George Lopez.

Four courses — the Classic Club, SilverRock Resort, La Quinta Country Club, and the Arnold Palmer Private Course at PGA West — are in the rotation for the five-round tournament, with SilverRock being included for the first time.

San Diego native Charley Hoffman comes back to the Hope this season as the defending champion.

“It was obviously a great start to the year,” Hoffman said of his first career PGA Tour triumph. “It just opened up a lot of doors that I didn’t have open before winning.”

Among those in the field looking to dethrone Hoffman are past champions Fred Couples (1998), David Duval (1999) and Justin Leonard (2005), and Southland natives Anthony Kim, Paul Goydos, John Mallinger and Pat Perez.

Celebrities scheduled to compete include actors Anthony Anderson and Don Cheadle, musicians Michael Bolton and Meat Loaf, and baseball legend Yogi Berra. The field of celebrities will play SilverRock Wednesday, La Quinta County Club Thursday, the Palmer Course Friday, and the Classic Club Saturday.
