A Smart Start

The key to lowering your scores begins on the putting green.

By SANDRA PALMERPublished: January, 2007

Golf has been my life for 50 years. Most of my career was spent with legendary teacher Harvey Penick, and the experiences I had will last a lifetime and have influenced my approach to the game and instruction.

Penick said that every teacher should try to understand what’s going on in a pupil’s mind. Keeping it simple, not being too technical and putting himself in the pupil’s place were key points of his philosophy.

Those principles are the source of my teaching, and they will help you on the golf course and in other aspects of your life.

Penick also used to say that improvement comes in plateaus. A good place to start is chipping and putting. Devoting 90 percent of your practice time to the short game will knock five strokes off your game. I guarantee it.

Turning a 95 into a 90 on the scorecard starts with good putting, which is a combination of alignment and distance control. Here’s what to do:

• Read your putt from behind the ball.

• Walk up to the ball and take your stance.

• Keep your hands even with or slightly ahead of the ball at address.

• Keep your eyes directly over the ball.

• Concentrate on the length of the putt.

• Roll the ball on your line.

• See it. Believe it. Trust it.

Now it’s up to you. Do you want to shoot lower scores? If you do, the rewards will be great.   SG
