Plato once wrote, “The beginning is the most important part of the work.” A key to a great beginning is the development of a game plan. Preparing how you will play the golf course creates your road map to excellence. Devise a plan for each course you’ll play. Be specific. Write down where you want to hit each shot, where you might want to miss your shots depending on pin locations and what areas you want to avoid. Make sure you’re realistic in your plan. Don’t plan for the perfect shot, but rather one you hit about 70 percent of the time. That is, if you cannot typically carry the water on your nemesis hole, then plan for a lay-up strategy. Now execute what you have devised. Don’t vary. Stick with it, especially under pressure. Excellence starts with a consistent plan.
