Martin Laird

The swinging Scot stresses tempo.

By Glenn MondayPublished: January, 2012

Martin Laird turned Pro in 2004 and became a Nationwide Tour graduate in 2007. He won his first PGA Tour event in 2009 and again in 2010. Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, Laird is the Arnold Palmer Invitational defending champion.

Glenn Monday: When did you start golfing?
Martin Laird: I remember always having a little plastic club in my hand as a small child, and then I played ever since I could walk.

GM: If someone were to compliment your swing today, what would you most like to hear?
ML: The one thing I work on and feel good about is my tempo. Even when I go at it, I try to make it smooth with good tempo.

GM: What tip could you give amateurs to help their swings?
ML: I always tell them what we just talked about. Work on smoothness and balance. Strong legs help balance, so I’d also suggest doing exercises that strengthen the legs.

GM: What would you tell the average players that would help them to better hold up under pressure?
ML: Try to go to the range more. You try to groove your swing and under the gun feel as though you’re swinging with only 80 percent of your top speed.
