Mind over Matter

Tap into your creative genius.

By GREGG STEINBERGPublished: March, 2007

Seve Ballesteros has one of the greatest short game minds ever. He created magic around the greens like no other. Perhaps one of the reasons for his prowess was his ability to tap into his creative genius.

Ballesteros likens his artistic powers around the green to hearing tunes being played by his clubs. He understands the notes that his clubs are playing, which allows him to compose the melody needed for each shot. He became one of the greatest players ever because he learned to unleash his creative side.

Here is a practice green drill that will help tap into your creative genius:

When most golfers are on the green, they simply practice their stroke. However, to tap into your creative side, develop a routine that promotes a reactive mind. A great example of a reactive routine is one adopted by Davis Love III. In his routine, he looks twice at the hole. But, as his eyes are moving back to the ball on the second look, he begins to take his putter back. He is reacting to the shot, instead of over-thinking.

Find a routine that allows you to become reactive. You may be comfortable with one look or perhaps three looks. Find what works for you and then practice that routine so that it becomes automatic and allows you to tap into your creative genius on the greens.  SG
