Patient: Male Age: 44 Current Handicap: 14 Lowest handicap: 10 Plays: Twice a month Practices: Occasionally Ailment: I’ve always had a problem playing out of wet bunkers. If I try to play it like a normal bunker shot, I have trouble getting the ball out of the sand. If I try to pick it off the sand, I tend to hit screamers across the green. What’s your suggestion for playing these shots? Prescription: There’s a certain degree of uncertainty to playing any bunker shot. When you add in another variable such as wet sand, certain adjustments and calculations must be made. Dig your feet into the sand while taking your stance to get an idea of how far the wetness extends beneath the surface. If there’s just a fine layer of wet sand, you can play the shot the same way as if the sand was dry. If the wet sand extends deeper, the ball will travel farther with less swing but you won’t be able to hit the shot as high as you might like. Pick a line where you can get the ball on the green quickly, grip down on the club and make a shorter backswing and follow-through. Patient: Male Age: 36 Current Handicap: 9 Lowest handicap: 9 Plays: About twice a week Practices: Once a week Ailment: I just joined a club where there are tight, mounded areas around the greens. This allows me to putt or use a fairway wood from off the green. My playing partners give me a hard time for not chipping or using a more lofted club in these situations. How do you decide what club to use from off the green? Prescription: The first thing to remember is that golf is an individual game. In order to play your best, you need to play the shots you’re comfortable with and have brought you success. My next piece of advice would be to identify your weaknesses and work on them. You need to work on other types of shots in practice. When you feel comfortable playing them on the course, you can add them to your arsenal of shots. Divide your practice time into two parts. The first is continuing to improve on what you’re doing. The second in-volves experimenting with shots you might only play once in a while. This will make you a more well-rounded player. SG |
