 Glenn Monday: What fundamental would you like to see amateurs practice more? Bo Van Pelt: One of the keys that gets overlooked is balance in the finish position. In many cases, amateurs worry too much about positions but lack balance. Good balance can cure many flaws. GM: How long do you hold your finish? BVP: On iron shots, I hold it until the ball lands. This needs to be practiced on the range for it to be a good swing habit. On driver shots, I like to hold the finish until the ball reaches its apex. Too many amateurs are in a hurry to get to the next ball. My advice is work on one swing at a time and practice your balance every time. GM: What are your grip pressure thoughts? BVP: I try to keep constant grip pressure throughout the swing. I see amateurs re-gripping during the swing or holding the club too tight. I am a right-handed player and it is my left hand that is more on the club. I concentrate on keeping the left hand firm, and the right hand is really just along for the ride. GM: What happens with the grip under pressure? BVP: The tendency is to tense up. The more you practice, the less tense you get. Practicing a fundamentally sound swing allows you to trust your swing.
