Charley Hoffman had a great rookie year on the PGA Tour in 2006, winning more than $1 million. L.A.-based teaching pro Glenn Monday recently spoke with the San Diego native. Glenn: How old were you when you had your first lesson? Charley: I remember going to a group clinic when I was 6 years old. I was taught the interlocking grip at that time and now I’m overlapping. Glenn: Where does your power come from? Charley: Growing up, I was a small kid, so I tried to learn how to hit it as hard as I could every time. As I grew bigger, more power came to me. Glenn: With your great club-head speed, is balance something you work on a lot? Charley: Yeah, doing physical training, I’m trying to keep my lower body strong so it can help the upper body. I want a strong foundation to support my club-head speed. Glenn Monday is the author of “Know Your Swing.” He can be reached at (310) 322-8924. |
