One on One with David Frost

The South African describes his gripping strength and other components of his golf game.

BY GLENN MONDAYPublished: February, 2009

David Frost has won 10 times on the PGA Tour and another 12 times worldwide. The South African will be eligible to join the Champions Tour in September.

Glenn: How old were you when you started playing?
David: I caddied for my father and then took up the game when I was 14. As a kid, I worked on my father’s wine farm to make enough money to buy golf equipment and pay for golf.

Glenn: How would you approach teaching?
David: I’d first teach a good grip, stance and balance at address. Next I’d work on the mechanics of the swing.

Glenn: What type of grip do you use?
David: I use the overlapping Vardon grip.

Glenn: Describe your grip strength.
David: I hold with 60 percent of my gripping strength with both hands.

Glenn: What are you currently working on?
David: Turning the proper mechanics into an athletic swing. I’m also working on a solid top-of-the-back-swing position.

Glenn: What practice advice do you have for golfers?
David: Try to hit around 30 balls as often as possible to keep the feel. Practice a well-balanced setup and a well-balanced finish. Try to become a better putter.
