(Photo: Eddie Meeks) Age: 34 Handicap: 14 Plays: Twice a month Practices: Maybe once a month Question: What can I do to keep my rhythm going throughout a round, and what can I do to get it back once I’ve lost it? Prescription: Experiment with these four suggestions to find what works best for you. 1. Have a pre-shot routine for every shot. This gives you the best chance of keeping your rhythm consistent from shot to shot. 2. Take slow, deep breaths to keep from speeding up too much. 3. Count 1 ... 2, with 1 the completion of your backswing and 2 representing impact. 4. Whistle at the same pitch throughout your swing. Fuzzy Zoeller does this to help with his rhythm, but it’s not as easy as you think. In addition to focusing on your rhythm, pay close attention to your ball flight when you feel your rhythm is off. The ability to understand and correct your ball flight will get your game back on track and keep you from constantly focusing on finding perfect rhythm. Patient: Male Age: 50 Handicap: 12 Plays: Three or four times a month Practices: Maybe once a month Question: I’ve noticed a number of PGA Tour players choking down on their clubs. Are they using longer clubs and choking down for accuracy? Would there be a benefit to me choking down on my standard-length clubs? Prescription: Anthony Kim is the only professional I have seen who chokes down an inch or two on full-length shots. Most grip down when they want to hit the ball a shorter distance with more control. Anthony grew up using his dad’s clubs, which were too long for him. He tried normal-length clubs but still gripped down out of habit and didn’t want to change something that worked well for him. Choking down can increase your ability to control the club and make better contact. Place impact tape on your clubface and see if there is much of a difference in contact between choking down and not choking down. Keep an eye on ball flight and distance. Your results will tell you if gripping down is for you. Do you have a question for Doctor Golf? Ask it here! |
