Follow the Process

Developing a pre-shot routine takes a lot of practice - but it can pay off under pressure.

BY SANDRA PALMERPublished: November, 2007

Building a good routine should be practiced so it becomes automatic. You'll be amazed how it helps you overcome distractions and better handle pressure situations.

I think a good routine keeps you in the moment, because the only shot that's important is the one you're about to play.
A pre-shot routine should include a target, golf club, getting comfortable and a good setup position. Make it your own but do the same thing every time.

These steps helped me in every tournament I won, and I know they can help you, too.

Club Selection
1) Determine how far you are to your target.
2) Figure out the ball flight you want to have.
3) Assess the lie of the ball.
4) Select a club to fit the ball flight and distance.

Target Selection
1) Stand behind the ball. Relax and take a deep breath.
2) Select a target where you want to hit the ball.
3) Select an intermediate target about a foot in front of your ball. It can be a divot, leaf, twig or loose blade of grass between your ball and the target.

 Alignment
1) Relocate your intermediate target.
2) Grip the club and approach your ball.
3) Set the clubface down so it points at the intermediate target.
4) Set your body to where your clubface is aiming.
5) Set your feet.
6) Glance at the target then back at the ball - twice.
7) Swing away with trust and confidence.

Picture hitting your ball to the target. Your best swings will occur when you don't think about mechanics. The more you practice your routine on the range, the more it will become automatic on the golf course.  SG
