One on One with Fred Couples

Fan-favorite Fred Couples offers some insight to Glenn Monday.

BY GLENN MONDAYPublished: May, 2009

One of the PGA Tour’s most charismatic players, the 49-year-old La Quinta resident has 15 Tour victories, including the 1992 Masters.

Glenn: What is your strength and weakness as a golfer?
Fred: My strength is driving the ball, and my 3-wood is pretty accurate. My weakness is to try to get too much out of my game. I don’t show it, but I do get frustrated too quick.

Glenn: What’s your major swing thought?
Fred: My main thought is to get the club back and stay behind the ball. I don’t want to move in front of the ball because when I do, I hit it to the right.

Glenn: Are you a believer in precise body alignment prior to putting the swing in motion?
Fred: Yes. I try to stand square to where I want the ball to start out. Most pros work the ball. If I’m playing a cut shot, I’ll aim left. That puts me square to where the ball starts out. Then the ball corrects itself because of the path of the swing. The hips, the toes and the shoulders need to be squarely aimed.

Glenn: Gay Brewer helped your swing early in your career. What was his tip for you?
Fred: Hand position at address. To draw the ball, move your hands a little forward. And to fade the ball, start with your hands slightly back of center. That little tip has helped a lot.
