"Everyone has his own choking level, a level at which he fails to play his normal golf. As you get more experienced, your choking level rises." |

![]() Patient: Female Age: 35 Current Handicap: 7 Lowest handicap: 4 Plays: A few times a month Practices: Occasionally Ailment: I'm looking for more distance off the tee. I tried my boyfriend's driver and picked up about 20 yards, but I wasn't as accurate with it. I'm pretty strong, athletic and tall. Should I look at playing with a man's driver or a women's driver with a longer shaft? Prescription: If you have a repeating swing with correct movements and are getting solid contact with the ball, you can experiment with swing changes or your equipment to find a combination that allows you the greatest distance while maintaining control. Try increasing your swing speed by working with training aids that create resistance, such as power swing fans or weighted clubs. This will help you build core strength and balance while increasing clubhead speed. In addition, I recommend that you test several drivers. Variables in club fitting to maximize a player's performance include shaft length, shaft flex, kick point, grip size and degrees of loft. Patient: Female Age: 40 Current Handicap: Does not play Lowest handicap: See above Plays: Never Practices: Never Ailment: I'm not a golfer. My husband has been begging me for years to join him on the course. I've never understood the attraction of riding around in a golf cart for five hours. I'm not athletic and I'm not very patient. Golf just seems like it's hard, expensive and boring. Tell me what I'm missing. Prescription: Many women have come to me with similar feelings. Golf is a wonderful game, and with a little exposure and a bite from the "golf bug," you'll likely discover why it's so popular. Regarding your concerns, there are options to consider. If the time spent is an obstacle, consider playing shorter courses - which are better for beginners - or play only nine holes, which would take about two hours. If you'd like to get more exercise or don't like riding in a cart, you can walk the course. I also suggest taking golf lessons or attending a clinic. You'll feel more comfortable and acquire the knowledge and skills needed to get out and play. SG |
