![]() Use alignment aids (top) and light grip pressure to get the best out of your drives (PHOTO: Eddie Meeks). 1. On a scale of 1 (light) to 10 (tight), make sure your grip pressure is a consistent 3 throughout your swing. You want control of the club, but you don’t want to restrict the movement of your hands and arms, which help produce clubhead speed. Also, take three deep breaths during your pre-shot routine to rid your body of excess tension. 2. Right-handers should align their feet, knees, hips and shoulders slightly to the left of the intended target. An over-the-top swing is usually the result of body lines aimed directly at or a little right of the target. Using alignment tools is a good way to engrain good habits. 3. Think of your swing as a pendulum, with a smooth takeaway, slight hesitation at the top, acceleration at impact and a full follow-through. All good players have excellent posture and balance to swing rhythmically and confidently attack the ball. Eric Lohman is PGA director of golf at Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine.
