If you’re struggling with greenside chips, take a different approach — use your putter.

Using your putter on a greenside chip isn’t a commonly preached idea. However, if you’ve been struggling using your wedges and are looking for more consistency around the greens — and a way to dazzle your friends — try one of my favorite shots: the hammer putt. Use this approach and the ball will come up and out of just about any lie. You’ll also find it will come out with topspin, causing the ball to “kangaroo” forward. Here’s how to do it:

• Position the ball behind your back foot (left).
• Swing your arms and the putter straight up (middle).
• Drop the putter head directly down on top of the ball (right). Use the amount of swing that you would use for a putt of the same distance. Don’t follow through, stop the putter in the turf.
