Crunch time

When the going gets tough, it’s important to have a go-to shot to fall back on.

A three-quarter punch fade can be useful when the heat is on (PHOTO: Eddie Meeks).

All good players have a go-to shot when their nerves are jumping and the pressure is on.

Do you have one? If not, learn how to hit a three-quarter punch fade. It will come in handy the next time you need to come through in the clutch. Here are the five basics for this shot:

1. Grip down on the club for better feel and control, and use a stronger grip pressure than normal (6 on a scale of 1 to 10,  with normal being a 3).

2. Move an inch closer to the ball to create a more vertical hit into the back of the ball, which promotes solid contact and backspin.

3. Aim left of the pin to allow for the ball to start left, move left to right and drop toward the target.

4. Start and maintain a weight balance of 60 percent on your front foot and 40 percent on your back. Don’t worry or concentrate on your regular weight shift.

5. After contact, don’t let the toe of your club turn down, and try to hold the clubface open.
