The importance of solid, athletic posture in the golf swing cannot be understated. At address, there are six basic elements a player should strive to maintain: keeping weight distributed evenly on the balls of the feet; chin up; bottom out; arms hanging naturally; bending at the hip socket; and lightly flexed knees. Failing to maintain athletic posture — especially your spine angle — throughout the swing is one of the surest paths to inconsistent shots. The tendency to pick your head up to watch the ball in flight often promotes a loss of posture prior to impact. To prevent that from happening, try this simple drill. Look at the world at an angle while your ball is flying toward its target. In other words, don’t lift your head to watch the ball — instead, tilt your head upward while maintaining your posture. This will enable you to clear your upper body on the downswing through impact and encourage consistent posture all the way to the finish. I’m confident it also will encourage more consistent golf shots. Eric Lohman is PGA Director of Golf at Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine.
