Your ball is in the rough sitting down just a little. There are no trees in the way, so you have a shot to the green. All you have to do is get the ball to “jump” off the clubface with some zip on it. Make two adjustments — slightly open your clubface and body lines. An open clubface exposes the “bounce” on the bottom of the club and increases the loft angle. The exposed bounce helps keep the clubhead from getting tangled in the grass at or before impact. And the added loft helps the ball come out high. There is a course management aspect to this. Experts can possibly get enough height to fly the ball onto the green and stop it. However, as there will not be any backspin, most of us will need to land the ball short of the green and bounce it on. Bob Madsen is PGA Director of Instruction at San Diego’s Sycuan Resort.
