![]() The low loft of a fairway wood helps on lengthy bump-and-run shots (PHOTO: Eddie Meeks). The bump-and-run is a shot that can be played with a variety of clubs. Here are three ways to play it: 1) Select a 7- or 8-iron if your ball is sitting down or there is an obstacle in the way. Make sure the club thumps the ground with a descending blow. This will cause the ball to be trapped for an instant before it jumps off the club and into the air. 2) The extra length and decreased loft of a hybrid or fairway wood helps when you have a longer way to go. Use an open stance and make sure the heel of the clubhead is higher than the toe. 3) Use a putter and keep the ball on the ground when the lie is good and the grass is mowed down and firm. Putting every chance you get is probably your best option. Bob Madsen is PGA Director of Instruction at San Diego’s Sycuan Resort.
